LIVERPOOL boasts some of the finest collections of art in Britain, had in the Liverpool Academy of Arts one of the first academies of its kind in the country and has had some very fine artists working in the city.
But when it comes to artists of international standing, artists who made their marks on art history, there is really only one.
George Stubbs - the subject of a major exhibition at London's National Gallery this year - was born in Liverpool in 1724. Today he is known for his paintings of horses.
