Isolation can be a good thing, if you are a writer, artist or monk. But for a retailer, isolation can mean disaster. Cindy Balin, owner of Tower Drug and Gifts in Klamath Falls, Ore., is well aware that her store is a little off the beaten path, but through ingenuity and perseverence, she manages to get and keep traffic flowing through the store.
She even succeeds in turning isolation into an advantage, bringing to local customers items otherwise obtainable only after a 90-min. drive.
