For nearly three decades, R-502, an azeotropic mixture of CFC-115 and HCFC-22, has been an important refrigerant, primarily for commercial refrigeration applications. However, R-502 is now being phased out at an accelerated rate because of its ozone-depleting characteristics, making it necessary for the industry to identify its replacement quickly.
R-502 was initially designed and marketed for low-temperature refrigeration uses. However, its application has spread into other areas in recent years. For example, many supermarkets have used it in medium-temperature applications to minimize the number of refrigerants and to simplify servicing.
