NEW YORK -- Due to the wider availability of home-use blood pressure monitors, consumers have another convenient way to manage their health on a regular basis, possibly extending their lives.

Despite this key benefit, however, demand for the blood pressure kits in the 52 weeks ended April 17 remained relatively weak. Sales of the devices during that period in food, drug and discount outlets (excluding Wal-Mart Stores Inc.) slipped 0.5% to $95.4 million, according to Information Resources Inc.

But for the long term many industry observers are maintaining a positive outlook for home-use monitors based on aging populations and related factors.
