Ratification of the protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of women in Africa
Background
The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, hereafter referred to as the Charter, recognises the importance of women's rights through three main provisions. Article 18(3), covering the protection of the family, promises to ensure the elimination of all discrimination against women and also ensure protection of the rights of women. Article 2, the non-discrimination clause, provides that the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Charter shall be enjoyed by all irrespective of race, ethnic group, colour, sex, language, religion, ...
