We've all done it at one time or another--riding under an overpass or going through a tunnel at low revs and goosing it just to relish the sweet sound. It doesn't matter if anyone else is around. It is just so satisfying to hear and feel that exhaust note resonate in your head and chest.
I had the chance to go to some motorcycle drag races last summer, and it reinforced how important sound is to motorcycling. Sound is an integral part to any motorcycle's appeal; take that away and it just isn't the same. A key is that once you get used to how your bike sounds, you stop looking at the tach, because you just know when to shift.
