In the 1960s F1 teams used an assortment of trucks to haul their machines, tools and mechanics to races. Few thought of these conveyances as anything but workhorses. Colin Chapman thought they should be more.
Chapman, known for many firsts both in racing and in the auto industry, is also responsible for the first modern team transporter. Those multi-million-dollar vehicles festooned with sponsor logos and team liveries that ply Europe's highways and crowd race paddocks today all hearken back to a hauler affectionately known by Lotus mechanics as HMS Hethel.
