The sole right to use the Tokaj name for its wines belongs to Hungary, according to a ruling by Europe's highest court because Hungary's Tokaj is a protected geographic region. The court found that this designation takes precedent over Italy's "Tocai fruilano," which the court said is only a grape variety.
Slovakia and Slovenia are also impacted by this ruling since Hungary has reached an agreement with Slovakia to allow it to market Tokaj wine made from vineyards in the border region, according to Ceska Tiskova Kancelar and Slovenia will change its "Tokaj" wine name to "Tocaj."
