The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, has acquired perhaps the world's greatest private collection of photographs, the Gilman Paper Company Collection. The 8,500 photographs, whose value is probably over $50 million, includes many notable early prints. As well as works by Henry Fox Talbot, Lewis Carroll (his Alice Liddell as 'The Beggar Maid', c. 1859) and Gustave Le Gray, it includes lesser known masterpieces, such as Woman Seen from the Back (c. 1862) by the French photographer Onesipe Aguado.
