MORE THAN HALF OF THOSE SUFFERING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS do not seek professional help, according to anecdotal and survey evidence (Komiya, Good, & Sherrod, 2000; Reiger et al., 1993). Similar levels of an under-utilization of mental health services exist in Australia, Great Britain, and the United States (Barker, Pistrang, Shapiro, & Shaw, 1990; Cepeda-Benito & Short, 1998; Komiya et al.). By not seeking mental health services, these individuals do not receive treatment that tends to be effective for a wide range of disorders.
