Video duplicators improved the quality of the cost-effective but V controversial extended-play recording technology last year, and two major suppliers have extended their use of the format. But suppliers and duplicators consider the EP mode unlikely to see broad-scale acceptance at the consumer level on major releases.
Most suppliers agree that EP quality is better than it used to be. Rank Video Services' Master Sharp and West Coast Duplicating's TMD processes, along with QEP, a quality-control process used by Technicolor Video Services, have improved picture quality, though not enough to completely satisfy many suppliers or dealers.
