Jun. 14--Although General Motors Corp. plans to close plants and shed nearly a quarter of its hourly workforce in the next few years, the automaker's powertrain plants in Toledo and Defiance appear to be on solid ground, experts say.
Yet both factories could face problems as GM eliminates roughly 25,000 of 111,000 jobs, they add.
Toledo Powertrain supplies more than 30 GM vehicles with rear-wheel-drive transmissions, including large sport-utility vehicles on which U.S. sales are tumbling as gasoline prices remain high.
