A recent rash of consumer data security breaches has caught the attention of Congress. Options Congress is considering to deal with identity theft include a federal requirement that consumers be notified when personal records are threatened; authority for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to regulate data brokers; a national do-not-issue credit list; stronger rules for correcting errors on credit reports; and banning the sale of Social Security numbers.
