Few would have bet that the New York Mets would make a bid for the title of 2005's "America's Team."

Just when it took a miracle to salvage any hope of the 2012 Summer Olympics landing in New York, the Mets were clutch when their city needed a rally. The Queens-based team stepped up to help the U.S. Olympic movement save face. That's worth something, though New York City still probably won't get to ignite that 2012 cauldron.

The NYC2012 bid organizers have experienced a week worse than just about any in Mets history (and there've been some horror classics).
