The northern water snakes did not disappoint recently when I accompanied a first-grade class from Virginia Beach Friends School on a trip to First Landing State Park.
On a field trip you always hope to see something special, but many times, birds, snakes and other critters disappear when a chattering group of kids comes bounding along the trails. So, I kept my fingers crossed as we reached what I knew was one of many northern water snake hangouts in the park.
