While Bhob Rainey's away, The BSC will play - twice.
Rainey, the Cambridge-based composer of avant-garde, often improvised music, left for Japan this week for a gig playing his soprano sax. But meanwhile, Rainey's electro-acoustic ensemble, The BSC, has two local shows coming up in his absence.
Together they'll show how Rainey, who earned a master's degree in jazz from New England Conservatory in 1997, has made his eight-member band an essential player in Boston's alternative, none-of-the-above music scene.
"I actually like to think of it as `all-of-the-above,' " he said.
