The Hippocratic Oath is one of the oldest binding documents in history. Believed to have been written as early as the sixth century BC, its invocation to doctors to treat the sick to the best of their ability, to preserve patient privacy and to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation, is considered sacred to this day. 'The Oath of Hippocrates', according to the American Medical Association's Code of Medical Ethics (1996 edition), 'has remained in Western civilization as an expression of ideal conduct for the physician.'
