HOUSTON -- Commissioners of the Corpus Christi Port Authority in Texas voted unanimously Tuesday to seek a permit to build Safeharbor, an inshore crude oil terminal capable of serving vessels larger than 350,000 deadweight tons (dwt).
The Safeharbor project is seen as a way to protect the long-term viability of the Texas Coast refining industry from foreign competition by lowering crude transportation costs.
If the $320 million project is approved, it would involve deepening the Corpus Christi Ship Channel to 80 feet from the current 47 feet and cutting an 80-foot-deep channel 10 miles into the Gulf of Mexico. The project would be paid for with ...
