This is a record that, for one reason or another, was close to never being made. James Brown, a singer from Macon, Georgia, had been signed to King Records by label boss label boss Syd Nathan, but a string of non-hits left Brown's career teetering precariously close to the brink, staring failure in the sweat-covered face.
