THE University of Wolverhampton's Innovative Product Development Centre has set up a rapid metal tooling and components service, using the direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) technique. The service operates from the university's Telford campus and is based on its EOS Eosint M 250 Xtended DMLS machine which is one of only three in the UK.

The machine uses familiar layer geometry to build functional dense metal parts from 20 micron layers of high-strength hardenable tool steel powder that are fused by a computer-guided laser.
