Recently, I have been involved in discussions with other editors about the importance of the "Letters to the Editor" column in a journal. This is one place where a person can not only respond to an article, but also put ideas forward into national and even international debate.
When most people open a journal, one of the first sections they will read is the letters column. This means that the majority of journal readers are interested in what others have to say. It also means that the letter writer's point of view is reaching a majority of the journal's readers. (1)
