DVD spending compensates for fall in VHS and VCD sales

Consumers worldwide spent almost $50bn on buying and renting video software in 2003--up more than 15 per cent on the amount spent in 2002. DVD is increasingly cannibalising the VHS and Video CD (VCD) markets. A 30 per cent decline in VHS software spending to just under $14bn and a more modest 11 per cent fall in VCD software spending to $800m was compensated by strong growth in DVD spending by consumers worldwide in 2003.
