Jun. 18--Stamford-based Purdue Pharma on Wednesday will announce how many of its approximately 2,200 workers it will lay off in reaction to the loss of patent protection on OxyContin tablets.

"Everyone's been told we have to be half of our [current] size," spokesman Robin Hogen said Friday.

The cuts will come in Stamford, where it has approximately 700 employees, and in New York and New Jersey, he said, and will be effective immediately. The company plans to file a WARN notice with the state Department of Labor on Wednesday, with the layoffs happening toward the end of next week.
