* The practice of integrating students with mild academic and intellectual disabilities into regular classrooms has been justified to a large extent by arguments based on the potential social and emotional benefits to the child with the disability. Some of these arguments include removing the stigma associated with segregated placements, facilitating the modeling of appropriate social behavior from children without disabilities, and enhancing the social status of the students with disabilities with their peers without disabilities (Jenkinson, 1987; Madden & Slavin, 1983; Stobart, 1986).
