WITH ISTANBUL TALES winning the prestigious National Competition at the city's 24th International Film Festival--and with many of the two-week movie celebration's more interesting offerings being set in Istanbul--this year, the city itself became the festival's leading protagonist.
Yet debate continues as to whether Turkish cinema, which has recently been doing well internationally, still has the excellence it was able to show with Nuri Bilgi Ceylan's Distant or Fatih Akin's Head On.
