European governments gave the final "go-ahead" for the launch of the Galileo satellite navigation network, Europe's own global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate service under civilian control. It will be interoperable with the U.S.-controlled Global Positioning System (GPS) and Russia's GLONASS satellite constellation.

The $3.6 billion system, Europe's largest-ever infrastructure project, will be based on 30 satellites (27 operational and three spares) and should be ready by 2008. Final agreement on the network was reached at a meeting in Paris of members of the European Space Agency (ESA).
