GIS data development and maintenance is critical to implement mapping capabilities in any public-safety agency. Data quality, including data source, needs to be analyzed before they can be approved for public-safety service response.
For example, the U.S. Census Bureau developed Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) data containing road networks from sources with scales of up to one inch: 100,000 feet. At such scales, the width of a pencil point is more than 150 feet. Decisions regarding location identification based on such a small-scale source map could yield erroneous conclusions.
