THE scientist's world is routinely changed by experiments; in the light of new findings, established knowledge comes to be seen differently. On July 16th 1945, though, scientists changed the world far beyond the laboratory. Before dawn, a light brighter than the sun burst upon the New Mexico desert--a light so bright that, had anyone been looking, they could have seen its reflection on the dark side of the moon.
