As hundreds of Fort Drum soldiers return home to their loved ones in the coming days, thousands prepare for their turn to serve in Iraq.
About 2,000 soldiers with the 10th Mountain's 2nd Brigade have started coming home after a year in Iraq. The 1st Brigade's 3,000-plus soldiers will soon replace them.
The 1st Brigade learned last December of its coming deployment. It is scheduled to ship out in late summer to early fall. Meanwhile, the 3rd Brigade and 10th Mountain's 4th Brigade at Fort Polk, La., are set to leave in the next several months for Afghanistan.
