Jun. 25--PITTSBURGH -- Milk isn't what it used to be.

Though it's among the most cherished of American staples, milk sales have plummeted for decades while demand has soared for new beverages that contain traces of milk.

That fact brought several dozen lawyers and economists to a hotel ballroom alongside the Monongahela River this week to debate a proposal to expand the U.S. Department of Agriculture's definition of milk to include all kinds of new products, including low-carbohydrate beverages, drinkable yogurt and even sports drinks.
