Recently revived interest in oil shale development in northwest Colorado includes wild statements about the trillions of barrels of oil that theoretically can be extracted from rock. The discussion must also include a cautious review of the repeated failure of earlier attempts to develop oil shale, the costs to local economies, and the effects on Colorado's air, water, and the rest of its environment.
