Jun. 27--The price of gas has soared, but the high cost of car insurance is going down a bit for many New Yorkers.
Up to 136,000 drivers statewide could find their bills trimmed as a result of a new round of rate cuts by insurers AIG, GMAC and Chubb.
Customers of the three companies will save an average of 4 percent to 6 percent, state officials said yesterday. Ten other New York insurers already have lowered their rates this year.
"The consumer is seeing the benefit of our fraud-fighting efforts," state Superintendent of Insurance Howard Mills said yesterday.
