Jun. 28--Faced with a future shortfall of its basic electric supply, Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency has joined six other Upper Midwest utilities in a $1.1 billion expansion of a South Dakota generating plant.
SMMPA will invest as much as $100 million in Big Stone II, located near Milbank, S.D. That will buy about an 8 percent stake in the new station, or 47 megawatts (million watts) of continuous power.
The Rochester-based agency, which supplies electricity for 18 Minnesota towns including Rochester and Austin, will be ready for the new power flow.
