While the yodeler might be king in the Swiss-American community of New Glarus, Wis., it is the dairy cow that is indisputably queen.
Just outside of town, herds of brown Swiss dairy cows graze in meadows tucked into the gentle hills of southwest Wisconsin. In town you'll see another herd of cows - these made of fiberglass and creatively decorated.
Patterned on Chicago's highly successful "Cows on Parade" (an idea Chicago borrowed from Zurich, Switzerland), "New Glarus Painted Cows" arrived in 2000 to inhabit the streets of a town that is as Swiss as the cowbells that clank when you enter its shops. The cows were imported ...
