For several years, conservation organisations have proposed establishing freshwater protected areas (FPAs). More recently government and international bodies have proposed FPA networks. Despite the level of interest and commitment evident from the number of proposals, there is no agreed framework for an Australian FPA system or even any widespread common understanding of what such a system would consist of. Here we outline the necessary components of an FPA system and answers common questions regarding the definition of FPAs and their needs and benefits.
