A thin coating on at least the face of a basalt fabric can produce a flexible and stable textile, according to International Patent WO 02 086213. The Applicant, Belgian company Groep Masureel Veredeling, claims its process overcomes the problem of filament breakage and opens new possibilities in the manufacture of fire protective wear.
According to the company from Wavelgem, when basalt fibres are extruded they are usually sized simultaneously to improve their processing characteristics: the size fills cavities in the fibre's surface and creates a smoother filament.
