Jun. 29--TOKYO -- Aomori Prefecture asked the national government Wednesday to take measures against the fire blight plant disease that could affect apple trees in Japan if its quarantine checks on U.S. apple imports are eased, officials said.

Aomori Gov. Shingo Mimura made the request to Hiroshi Nakagawa, director general of the Food Safety and Consumer Affairs Bureau at the agriculture ministry, following a World Trade Organization panel's ruling against the quarantine checks last week, they said.

Aomori is the largest apple-producing prefecture in Japan.
