LIMA is one of South America's biggest cities, with a population of more than seven million. Until now, though, buses have provided most public transport. This is soon to change with extension of its metro line into the city centre, and further construction to give a north-south and east-west network.

The 10km metro has seven stations, but operates only on Saturdays and Sundays, and carries few passengers. Bids are being invited to design, build and operate a 12km extension that will take the line from its northern terminus of Atocongo right into the heart of Lima. The winner is expected to be announced by the end of the year.
