Extend metal component life, increase reliability, and reduce overall costs--sounds like typical sales hype. But that's exactly what shot peening accomplishes. How? The shot peening process propels steel (or sometimes glass or ceramic) spheres at the surface of a work piece, impinging the surface and causing a plastic deformation. The area surrounding the plastically deformed surface is then in a state of compression, which strengthens the part and improves resistance to stress corrosion cracking and fatigue failure.
