NEW ROCHELLE -- Local officials are aggressively pursuing plans for a 575,000-square-foot complex to house UNICEF's international headquarters.
The city is one of five contenders fighting for the United Nations organization and is determined to bring UNICEF from New York City to New Rochelle "where it belongs," according to Mayor Timothy C. Idoni.
"This is one of the most important things we're working on at this time," Idoni said. "Many doubted New Rochelle's ability to get this far. We've held our own and surpassed their (New York City's) efforts. They're scared to death we're going to take Unicef here."
