For the first time New York City history, a Mexican woman conducted a professional orchestra concert. Alondra de la Parra, the 24-year-old founder and artistic director of the Mexican American Symphony Orchestra debuted her company in the 2004 Mexico Now festival at New York's Town Hall. Though still pursuing a degree in piano performance at the Manhattan School of Music, she is already a guest conductor with the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra. Her grandmother, Yolanda Vargas Dulche, was a very successful and wealthy television writer, but for Alondra, success is a result of talent and tenacity.
