A recent study shows that allergy to wheat, rye and barley can cause a weakening of bones called osteoporosis.
This tells us that all people who are diagnosed with osteoporosis should have blood tests called a celiac panel. If it is positive, they need a small-bowel follow-through X-ray.
If this test shows that the linings of the intestines are flat, they probably have celiac disease and can prevent further destruction of their bones by avoiding all foods that contain a protein called gluten, found in wheat, rye and barley.
