A farmworker who drowned Thursday evening in Genoa was in the United States illegally, the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office said.
Eric Lopez died after jumping into a pond at Willet Dairy, Route 34. Lopez, Jennifer Montalvo and Osia "Chino" Vasquez went to the pond shortly before 7 p.m. for a swim, Sheriff Rob Outhouse said. Temperatures reached the upper 80s Thursday afternoon.
Lopez jumped in and never surfaced. The drowning was ruled accidental, Outhouse said.
