Talk about your Fourth of July grand finales.
NASA plans the grandaddy of 'em all in the early morning hours of the Fourth when a washing machine-size projectile from the space agency's Deep Impact probe is scheduled to slam into the core of a comet called Tempel 1.
The timing is no coincidence. The space agency is well aware of the public relations potential of interplanetary pyrotechnics on the patriotic Fourth. It no doubt hopes people will stand up and salute, and write their congressman to tell them to increase NASA's budget next year.
Oh yeah, and maybe they'll forget about those shuttle problems.
