A Muslim man who carried the Quran to school and asked to have time off on Fridays for prayer says he lost his teacher's assistant job with the Syracuse school district because of his race and religion.
Abdul-Raoof Mustafa sued the district in U.S. District Court last week, saying he was fired last year from his job at H.W. Smith Elementary School because he's black and Muslim.
Mustafa, 49, was hired in 2001 as a teacher's assistant. The district decided not to rehire him last year, based on the recommendation of H.W. Smith's principal, Sharon Birnkrant, the lawsuit said.
