Before there were dinosaurs, there were ferns. In fact, they were thriving 200 million years before flowering plants evolved. That may be the reason they seem to cope so ably with extreme conditions. Last year they took our cool, wet weather in stride - which is not really unusual, since those conditions are ideal for many ferns. But those same ferns seem to be doing equally well in the garden this year when the weather is the exact opposite.

During the last month I've viscerally understood what "scattered" showers means as storm after storm has passed by my garden. High temperatures and frequent winds have not helped conditions. ...
