Jul. 11--Stan Allen is at the center of efforts to introduce a foreign species of oyster to the Chesapeake Bay.
Allen, a 54-year-old scientist who lives in Mathews County with his wife and two children, works as director of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Technology Center. He has spawned millions of baby oysters since he came here in 1997.
His goal is to help create an aquaculture market for the Asian variety of oyster with the hope that it will help the oyster industry recover from the diseases that have decimated the native oyster population.
