SANTA CLARITA - When Ellie Laks-Callahan was a little girl, she was a sucker for abandoned animals.
``I would drag them home and ask if I could keep them, but my parents would let them go when I went to school,'' she said. ``They were not amused.''
Her animal fascination grew as she got older, leading her to establish a sanctuary for abused and abandoned creatures of all sorts on a half-acre parcel in Tarzana. Two years ago, she and fiance Jay Weiner found a six-acre farm against a Santa Clarita hillside, where The Gentle Barn has become a nurturing place for both animals and Laks-Callahan's other love - children.
