After 27 years in therapy - as the therapist - Mark Matloff understands the plight of caregivers, especially those who care for someone with Alzheimer's disease.

"It just kind of drains them," he says, explaining the high rates of depression among caregivers. "It's a very isolating disease. It keeps people tied up with taking care of their loved ones."

As time goes on, the caregiver becomes more pessimistic and less able to care for themselves, says Matloff, a DeWitt psychologist.

"It's very noble to be a caregiver, and it's very good and kind. But that does not make it easy."
