Whilst the standards on vitamins and minerals adopted by the Codex Alimentarius, a joint body of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Health Organisation, do not replace existing national standards or create new national rules, they are designed to function as a guideline concerning the labelling of food supplements. This is the first time that Codex has approved recommendations on vitamin and mineral supplement labelling, but it has been prompted by concerns that many consumers are unaware of the harmful effects of taking supplements in excessive amounts.
